THE SCHOOL YEAR IS RUNNING DOWN, AND THE RUNNING SEASON IS RAMPING UP

One of the good things about spring time at school is the fact that MOST of the time consuming after school activities are done. That leaves me some valuable training time. One of the many things that has suffered since I became a high school principal is my running / training...(among family time, personal education, keeping tabs on my mother, friendships, and personal time with my wife).

I now get to start spending some, not much but some, time training for some of my favorite spring and summer time races. I also will get to train for a couple new races. One of the benefits of training for these races is the fact that I get in much better physical shape: I eat better (so my insides improve), my back stops hurting, and I get sick less.

I am looking forward to some quality training time.

Now for some of the funnier things that have happened at school lately:

1. A mother called in to complain that I was too hard on her daughter about her NOT coming to school first period. She then made the comment "I did not realize it was against the rules to not come to school first period". This is a mother saying these things, you have to be kidding me.

2. One young man was coming down with the flu. Said he was congested in his head and chest...then said, with a straight face, "I do not know if I am going to live until this afternoon, I may have a heart attack".....it was the flu.

3. Two high school boys got into a "slap fight" in the cafeteria over a seat. Can you picture two big Country Boys in the cafeteria slapping each other like girls all over a seat at a table....pretty funny sight.

4. At an assembly I saw a teacher getting on to a male student for talking to a girl student. The male student tried to explain why he was talking and the teacher wanted to hear nothing of it. He agreed and stepped aside, the girl leaned over and puked all over the teacher's feet, the boy grabbed her hair so as to not have her puke all over her own hair. In the end, he was just trying to convince her to leave....and the teacher paid the price for her insistence on staying.

None of those shock me. None.

I've realized that training for spring races won't work for me. Too much going on at the end of the year. Once I realized that, there was a lot less stress on me. FWIW.

Oh my what a job you have. God Bless You!!! Principals do not have it as easy as folks think. I think you have one of the toughest jobs, especially since you are responisible for all those kids & teachers in the school.

Good luck on your training in the Spring, it should bring some much needed stress relief.

I am a father of two. Married to a wonderful lady, who is a teacher. I myself used to be a teacher, but I am currently employeed as a High School Principal I love my work, I love my family, and I enjoy running to take the edge off. I come from a long line of military men. In fact, it was my life-long dream to be a pilot in the Air Force...but due to circumstances beyond my control (lack of perfect eyesight), that dream was ot able to be realized. So, I stumbled into a new dream....attempting to become a world class educator. I am still a work in progress in the classroom, and on the roads.
